Blogging For Writers - Get Writing Jobs, And Increase Your Experience

May 1st, 2008 AngelaBooth Posted in Writing | No Comments »

Blogging is instant publishing, and it’s a real boon for writers, once they get their head around what a blog is, and why it’s an invaluable writing tool.

Without exception, within a month of starting a blog, every writer I’ve hounded to create a blog has reported: “I wish I’d started my blog years ago!”

Blogs are immensely powerful. If you’re not sure how to get started, use the steps I’ve outlined for you in this article:

1. Create a small blog

The biggest hurdle writers face in blogging is actually starting. You can spend months - even years, in thinking about blogging. This will not help you. Neither will researching blogging and blogging platforms.

Accept the fact that you’re procrastinating because you’re nervous, and put that nervous energy into blogging.

Just create a blog - on any platform. A month from now, or a week from now, if you decide you made a mistake, leave the blog and create another one. Proficient blogger-writers have dozens of blogs, for many uses.

I have around ten writing-related blogs, and many other blogs I’ve created for topics in which I have an interest.

2. Blog every day

You learn blogging by doing it - even if you’re not sure whether you’re doing it “right.” There are no rules in blogging; a blog is your instant publishing tool, use it as you please.

3. Read other bloggers

To get ideas for blogging, read other bloggers. Get a feed/ RSS reader, and create a collection of bloggers who blog in areas in which you’re interested.

If another blogger creates a worthy post, blog about that post, and add your own opinions. Blogging has been called a “conversation”, and while I think that that’s true some of the time, not all blogs are conversations - if you want to turn off comments on a blog, do it. It’s always YOUR blog.

4. Create a Google Alert for your name

Now here’s where writers begin to appreciate the sheer power of a blog. Create a Google “alert” for your name. You can have alerts sent to you daily via email.

Within a month or so of starting, you’ll find that your name is popping up all over online.

5. See who’s reading your blog

Create a Google Analytics account, to see who’s reading your blog. Not only can you see who’s reading, you can see the terms they entered into a search engine to find a particular blog post.

Analyzing your readers is huge fun: you’ll be amazed when you see who’s reading your words - editors, publishers, and other potential clients you could attract in no other way.

6. Want to attract someone’s attention? Blog about them

Let’s say you’re writing a novel. You think Publisher X would be a good fit for the novel.

Start blogging about Publisher X. Just like you, Publisher X monitors the online world to see who’s talking about them… and so someone from Publisher X’s publicity and/ or marketing department will check out your blog. You may just get a request for a partial (chapters and outline) of your novel.

Many bloggers have gained publishing contracts via their blog. Others gain commissions and clients.

Blogging will open new worlds and opportunities to you as a writer. If you’re not blogging, you’re stifling your career. So start blogging: you will be amazed at how powerful blogging is, and what it can do for your career.

Keep Your Immune System Strong And You Will Feel Better

May 1st, 2008 LoriMatthews Posted in Wellness, Fitness and Diet | No Comments »

If a survey were taken, it would be unlikely that anyone asked would say that they would rather not have a healthy and strong immune system. However, that is basically what people are saying when they fill their bodies with junk food and fail to exercise or get enough of the recommended vitamins and minerals their body needs.

The human immune system is made up of three major components: the thymus, the spleen and the lymphatic. New born babies rely heavily on the thymus to keep their immune system healthy while adults can survive without it. They can also survive without a spleen. However, they become more susceptible to illness. The spleen destroys old red blood cells and filters blood through the body. Like blood vessels, the lymphatic system flows through the entire body. It carries a clear liquid called lymph. The lymphatic system carries nutrients and fluids throughout the body. It also knows when the body is carrying unwanted bacteria.

A newly discovered berry called the acai fruit is believed to be the next innovation in protecting the immune system. With the physical characteristics of a grape, the acai fruit comes from the Amazon rainforest and is rumored to be very nutritious. In fact, it is believed to be one of the world’s healthiest fruits. It is extremely high in fiber and is thought to help with digestion and reduce cholesterol. More importantly, however, the acai fruit is high in antioxidants. It contains more antioxidants than blueberries and is more powerful than red grapes. It can also give you more energy and slow the aging process.

Today stress is at the forefront of why some people find themselves not feeling well, or have a lack of energy and even moodiness. Stress can wreak havoc on your system and therefore leaving it weak to fight off free radicals. Pollution, lifestyle, processed foods, stress and more can be contributing factors to why your immune system isn’t running at top performance.

There are several things you can do to that may help keep your immune system healthy and strong.

• Eat healthy – It’s important what you put into your body. Make healthy choices and eat well balanced meals.

• Get enough rest – Your body needs 6-8 hours of sleep every night to release stress and re-build your immune system.

• Exercise – a consistent exercise program will not only strengthen your immune system, but will give you more energy and will release stress.

• Get enough vitamin C – 1000-2000 mg daily may decrease your risk of developing a cold.

• Drink plenty of water – staying hydrated will keep you healthy. Drinking at least 6-8 full glasses of water every day will keep your hydrated.

• Take a mineral supplement – many people don’t get enough zinc in their diet. This affects the immune system. Some foods high in zinc include pumpkin seeds, lean beef and oysters.

• Limit your alcohol and caffeine intake – this can interfere with the immune system.

Taking these steps to care for your body is critical to keeping you healthy, giving you energy, slowing the aging process and living longer. Who doesn’t want a healthier, happier, longer life?

Allergies: Have I Got An Allergy?

May 1st, 2008 BarryMcDonald Posted in Wellness, Fitness and Diet | No Comments »

To some people, the terms “allergies” and “sensitivities” are often used to mean the same thing, although much sensitivity is not a true allergy.

Allergies are an over-reaction of the immune system to foreign substances. When you come in contact with these substances your immune system has an unexpected hypersensitive reaction to elements which would otherwise be harmless. Allergies can a really tough thing to deal with. You can’t just go to a doctor and assume that they will magically find all your allergies and treat them. Allergies are something we acquire throughout our lifetime, and some people are more sensitive than the others. One must have at least one contact with a substance to become sensitive, or allergic to it.

You may suffer from an allergy because of family genes. Your allergies often develop slowly as your becomes sensitive to various things in the environment; just as the final straw is rumored to have broken the camel’s back, so the final allergen may trigger attacks and make life miserable. Fortunately, there are things to do to minimize the impact so that allergies don’t make your life a misery.

How Common Are Allergies?

Allergies are becoming one of the most common medical disorders. It is estimated that 60 million Americans, or more than one in every five people, suffer from some form of allergy, with similar proportions throughout much of the rest of the world.

What Can Trigger An Allergic Reaction?

Allergies can be inhaled, ingested or picked up through skin contact. Some common causes of allergies are trees, grasses, ragweed, mold, dust mites and food products such as milk, wheat, corn, eggs, and yeast.

Allergies can also be triggered by various allergy-causing substances (allergens) such as pollens, molds, and animal dander. In the springtime, typical allergens are pollens that come from grasses and trees.

During Spring and Summer, allergies are generally induced by wind-born tree, grass, or weed pollen, and can cause such symptoms as: headaches; fatigue; and sometimes coughing, wheezing, sneezing; nasal congestion; runny nose; watery, itchy, and or red eyes. Allergies can either be seasonal (occurring at specific times of the year) or perennial (occurring year-round). Research scientists do not know for sure why one person develops allergies and another person does not, although it is believed that allergies may be inherited.

Allergies are only triggered by proteins; sugars and fats, for example, do not cause food allergies. Dyes and food additives like MSG (monosodium glutamate) may cause allergic reactions, but are uncommon (less than 1 in 100, or 1%, in children and less than 1 in 500, or 0.2%, in adults).

Allergies in babies are most commonly associated with foods and viral respiratory infections. For reasons that confuse the medical world, children with allergies tend to outgrow them. Allergies to plants often cause a skin rash. Drug allergies usually involve the whole body and can lead to a variety of symptoms.

How Do You Treat Allergies?

Like the flu you can get shots to combat your allergy. The idea is that if you inject an allergic person with a little bit of the thing they’re allergic to, their body will learn overcome it.

Conclusion

Allergies are a common ailment among many people today, and the triggers that people are allergic to can vary greatly. For those who are suffering from allergies, it may be difficult to cope with the symptoms. Allergies can be much more than itchy skin and a high fever. Nowadays it is possible to identify allergies by simply looking at someone but unfortunately allergies can be caused by something seemingly unexpected, what you are allergic today, you may not be allergic to tomorrow.

Perry Ellis - Clothing, Shoes, And Perfumes

May 1st, 2008 JamesPhilips Posted in Womens Interest | No Comments »

Born in Portsmouth, Virginia to a middle-class family, Perry Edwin Ellis is one of the most successful fashion designers in today’s modern age. He was born on March 3, 1940 and was raised comfortably by his family with the support of their own fuel company. He studied in Williamsburg, Virginia taking up a degree in Business Administration, which he later used in managing his own fashion business.

Perry Ellis’ interest for fashion first came out while he was running his own department store retailing in Virginia. He established that firm to gain experience in the world of fashion simply as a merchandiser and buyer.

In his search for the ultimate experience, he joined the sportswear company owned by John Meyer in New York. The Vera Companies approached him in the 1970s for one purpose – to make designs for the Vera itself. It was only in 1976 when Perry Ellis decided to create his own line of women’s sportswear he called the Portfolio.

Since the introduction of the Portfolio, critics and consumers of fashion products praised Perry Ellis as one of the most outstanding designers of sportswear. Particularly the women love him for one reason – Ellis creates his own designs, each boasting a clean cut casual style. He established his own fashion house with the help of The Vera Companies, and named it Perry Ellis International. His showroom was first opened on Seventh Avenue in New York City.

Months after the release of Ellis’ casual styled sportswear, he came up with a menswear collection which was introduced successfully in the world market. Critics considered this product line as modern classic in appearance and style. This collection was followed by other successful launches; now featuring shoes, furs, accessories, and fragrances.

Perry Ellis International continued to expand throughout the 1980s. A number of labels were then released, including the Perry Ellis Collection and the Perry Ellis Portfolio. In 1984, the company formed a cooperation with Levi Strauss. The Portfolio line was revised one year after, and in 1986 the company saw a rise of about $250 million in their product revenues.

The House of Perry Ellis was transferred to a new management headed by Robert L. McDonald, Ellis’ close friend, in 1986 after Perry’s unexpected death. Marc Jacobs then took the role of Perry Ellis as a fashion designer for the company, who at that time was a fresh graduate. Jacobs started his own labels just in 1993, and it was him who became the head of the House of Louis Vuitton in Paris.

Perry Ellis International has undergone several other changes in the company management. Manhattan Industries was traded to a licensee of Perry Ellis, the Salant. It was from them where a Miami based textile company acquired the Ellis House in 1999. The corporation also acquired several other companies, including the Original Penguin and the Ping collection of the golf brand, both acquired early in the year 2003.

Today, the House of Perry Ellis is continually producing all the fashion products it is known for. Massive expansions are expected to occur with more and more consumers becoming interested to Perry Ellis’ great collections.

Diagnosing Thyroid Problems

May 1st, 2008 AndrewSmith Posted in Wellness, Fitness and Diet | No Comments »

Every human being has a thyroid gland. It is located above the trachea. It looks like a butterfly in the middle of our throats. This incredible yet small organ plays an important role in our body, because this is where our hormones are produced. Which obviously means the thyroid gland regulates the amount of energy and vitamins the body absorbs and excretes.

But like any normal body organ a thyroid gland also may cause sever damage to the body. Thyroid problems happen when there is a huge amount of irregularity in the production of the hormones. This may lead to serious repercussions to the rest of the human body. There are two types of thyroid problem; they are called hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism.

Hypothyroidism happened when the thyroid gland doesn’t produce enough hormones for the body. People suffering from this condition experience slow metabolism, fatigue and goiter. Hyperthyroidism is exactly the opposite, the metabolism is faster and the body excretes too much energy.

You may not know it but you might be suffering from a thyroid problem unknowingly. So how do we as common people diagnose a thyroid problem? Here are some simple steps you can follow to help save lives:

Step 1: Look for symptoms

Hypothyroidism – symptoms include: fatigue, constipation, easily feels cold, dry skin, lack of appetite, deeper voice and sometimes hair fall and depression.

Hyperthyroidism – symptoms may appear as: insomnia, nervousness, unusual sweating, increase lost of weight, frequent bowel movement and difficulty in concentrating similar to confusion.

Step 2: If you feel the symptoms, study your medical history. Finding the root cause of the disease will make it easier for you to find the appropriate treatment.

Here are some causes of thyroid problems:

Hyperthyroidism – Graves disease, pituitary gland problems, toxic adenomas and subacute thyroiditis.

Hypothyroidism – Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, removal of thyroid gland, too much iodide in the body and exposure to lithium.

Step 3: Be sure to seek medical help especially if the condition have worsen. Look out for these symptoms as well: shortness of breath, vomiting, abdominal and chest pain, high irritability level, confusion and coma.

Step 4: As soon as you seek professional care, make sure you are ready to take a series of test that will determine the status of your thyroid problem.

Step 5: Prepare to know the results of you test. There are two distinct ways to diagnose if a patient has hyperthyroidism or hypothyroidism. For hyperthyroidism, your thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) serum is lower compared to the standard. While for hypothyroidism, the TSH is higher than the normal rate.

Step 6: If your result matches any one of the two types, you better seek medication or treatment. Treatment will depend on how severe the problem may be. There are different treatments available so you don’t need to fret.

Thyroid problems may cause harsh damages to the body, but it is one of the easiest diseases to cure. We recommend that you research and consult your doctor regularly, to avoid abnormalities in the body.

How To Write A Eulogy - The Basics

May 1st, 2008 SydneyNelson Posted in Writing | No Comments »

Writing and delivering a first rate eulogy is essential not only in honoring the deceased but it can have a lasting impact on those attending the service.

Because, long after the eulogy and funeral service is over, the main points and theme of the eulogy will be remembered and associated with that special person.

This article will outline the main points to consider when writing a eulogy that will honor someone’s passing in a thoughtful and effective manner.

Consider a Theme

When I wrote my mother’s eulogy, it began as an ad-hoc report of what my mother’s guidance and parenting meant to me and my sisters. But eventually I settled on the theme of breaking the cycle of poverty and I’ll explain the reason.

Mom lived in dire poverty as a young girl in Jamaica and later as a teen in Belize where I was born. After my father’s untimely death she left us with relatives and came to America. She then re-married and acquired her Dental Assistant’s certification from the ADAA.

So after few years she brought all of us to live with her in Chicago where I attended grammar school through Chicago State University. While growing up mom was very adamant that we would do well in school and we did, along with her checking our grammar school homework nightly!

So obviously I settled on the theme of breaking the cycle of poverty she had to endure as a child and a sub-theme stressing the importance of a good education for your children.

My point is, to consider the aspects of the special person’s life or personality that would be the most cherished and remembered. And draft a report based on those topics centering on what you consider to be the most important aspect that should be remembered.

Accomplishments and Important Events

As you write your first draft you may remember certain accomplishments and special events in the life of your special person. In my case, I didn’t have all the dates and places assembled, but I continued writing because you can loose your chain of thought.

So it can be a plus to assemble important documents and relevant information ahead of time. But if you didn’t as I did, you can always update your eulogy later. The important thing is to get started and not let minor things distract you in the process.

Depending on the nature of the eulogy, you don’t want it to turn out to be a long winded listing of all the accomplishments or a biography. You basically want to assemble the necessary documents and information that will be in line with the theme you chose to expound upon.

Finalizing Your Eulogy

After you’re satisfied with your first draft, have another person or two including a non-relative read and critique your eulogy. You may get some good feedback on areas you may not have considered.

Then practice speaking the eulogy if you’re going to make the address at the funeral service. It can help you to maybe re-organize the eulogy and to learn areas you may want to stress during the reading. If you think you’ll be too emotionally overcome, select someone who is good at public speaking.

Overall, you want to be certain your eulogy will adequately honor your loved one and be a blessing to those present. You want to have a frame of mind that you’ll send them off with positive thoughts of caring and appreciation.

And most of all, refrain from pointing fingers for the negative parts of this person’s experience. Better to outline the positive life experience lessons your special person learned as a result of the trials we all will face in life.

5 Tips For Completing The Master Cleanse Fast

May 1st, 2008 GabrielKillian Posted in Wellness, Fitness and Diet | No Comments »

Information on completion of the master cleanse fast also known as the master cleanse lemonade diet. Master cleanser information and resources.

The master cleanse fast, a detox diet that lasts around ten days that many believe can cleanse your body of toxins and heavy metals, rejuvenate the body, increase sexual vigor, get rid of addictions, learn food allergies and lose unwanted pounds. The path of the master cleanse fast is not always an easy one. The steps below can help you to go through the master cleanse diet.

1. First and foremost, will power is going to be the determining factor whether or not you can complete the master cleanse fast. Sit down, pen in hand, and write out exactly what you hope to accomplish by going through this detox diet. Be very clear in your mind the outcome that you want to accomplish. Be assertive that this is the reality you want to create for yourself.

2. Create a support group of friends and family. Like with any diet, its important for others to know what you are going through. Just like quitting cigarettes, it is very important that others know and are prepared to help you in times of weakness.

3. Get a guide book for completing the master cleanse fast. This can also ensure that you complete the lemonade diet correctly and avoid health risks. We have provided information about this later on. A guide book allows you to assure yourself that you are not alone in this journey, that others, like yourself, have also gone through this cleanse. This reassurance and guide can be the determining factor in your success with the master cleanse fast.

4. Be safe. If you feel like you need to make adjustments for your health, don’t be foolish, be safe. Some individuals are not physically able to complete the master cleanse fast the first time around. Do what you feel comfortable with and absolutely do not endanger your health for any reason. This simply is not going to help you if you are not attentive to your needs. Keep in mind that food addictions and chemical addictions are different than a need to replenish the body. With this in mind you can help determine what actions to take.

5. Like all journeys, the battle is hardest during the first few days. Most feel that after the second or third day of the master cleanse, that they could continue on for weeks. Your body resets itself during the first few days, which makes these the hardest of all. Knowing this can be comforting. Also know that during the first two days are the most intense as far as detox goes. Many experience nausea and vomiting the first day.

If you’ve made the decision to take the master cleanse fast challenge be clear of your intentions. Go through the master cleanse diet with the right reasons in mind and be health conscious while doing so. Being haphazard and sloppy with the cleanse will only harm you. Get the facts and become knowledgeable about the cleanse and you will succeed.

3 Common Low Carb Diet Mistakes

May 1st, 2008 NickBrighton Posted in Wellness, Fitness and Diet | No Comments »

No matter what type of low carb diet you embark on, there are always times when you feel like dropping it for something else.

That would be a shame if you did, because as you probably realize, low carb diets are do flexible and varied that they are just too good to pass up. You get the benefit of improving your health, whilst losing weight…and STILL have tons of recipe options at your disposal.

Therefore, here’s the 3 key things you should avoid when starting or continuing your low carb diet, so that hopefully you don’t drop out from your diet any time soon!

1) Problem Ingredients in “Low Carb” Packaged Foods

Be wary of meal replacement bars, ice cream, and other “treats” labeled low carb or sugar-free. They often contain ingredients such as maltitol (the worst offender) which are just as bad as sugar in a lot of bodies. In general, products that talk about their “net carbs” or “impact carbs” deserve close scrutiny of the ingredients, and careful experimentation.

2) Carb Creep

You’re eating low carb. You’re feeling great, and the weight dropping off as if by magic. You’re not hungry between meals! You have energy! You can concentrate better! Wheee! You think you’ll have a piece of toast! It doesn’t matter! You still feel great! You think you’ll have some ice cream! Hey! You’re still losing weight! A little sugar in the coffee can’t hurt, can it? Maybe not, but…uh oh. Something has sent you over your own personal limit. Suddenly, you’re having carb cravings, you’re gaining weight, and you’re in a vicious circle that’s hard to break of eating carbs, being hungrier, eating more carbs…ugh.

Sometimes it happens more subtly, but it’s common to let more and more carbs creep in, sometimes unawares. If that happens, it’s time to take stock and probably start over, at least for a few days, to break that cycle.

3) No Exercise

There is a temptation to leave exercise out when talking about low carb diets, because often people can be successful at first while staying sedentary. However, there are several reasons for talking about exercise in any diet discussion (Atkins called it “non-negotiable”). One is that exercise lowers insulin resistance - this is probably partly why exercise alone will tend to help many people lose a few pounds.

The second is that exercise is good for our bodies in so many ways. And the third is that while we can lose weight by diet alone, at least to some extent, we are very unlikely to be able to maintain a significant weight loss without exercise.

As you can see, maintaining the right low carb diet is not exactly rocket science, but these mistakes are often too easy to fall prey to.

There are other things you should be wary of, but for the purposes of this article, that should be enough to give you a clear head start over everyone else.

If you’ve been on my 7 day course over at http://lowcarbdietformula.com you’ll know what I am talking about when I say that it’s surprising how many hidden pitfalls there are associated with a low carb diet.

That doesn’t mean you’ll necessarily fall into them like everyone else, but believe me, when you’re 2 months into your low carb diet, the last thing you want to do is let just ONE of these “traps” hinder your previous hard work.
